Section 1 · Audience
Who this guide is for
Buying Chinese drums from abroad works best when you treat the order like a procurement checklist—not a mystery box. This guide is written for:
- •Schools and community programs building or refreshing tanggu, waist-drum or lion-dance percussion sets.
- •Performance troupes (including lion dance teams) that need repeatable sizes, straps, stands or travel cases.
- •Retailers adding Chinese percussion SKUs with clear labeling and carton specs.
- •Wholesalers / importers consolidating multiple models or sizes into sea or air shipments.
If you are still choosing diameters in centimeters vs inches, start with Chinese Drum Sizes Explained (cm / inch), then return here to turn those numbers into a purchase order.
Section 2 · Identity & Process
How Matun works (Village Sourced / procurement)
Matun Drums is a Village Sourced purchasing agent rooted in Matun Village, Yanshi, Luoyang, China—a long-established drum-making area. Our job is to sit on the buyer’s side of the table:
What we are not
- ✕ Not a manufacturer that owns the drum plant. We do not claim proprietary assembly lines or “our factory floor” as if every shell came from one corporate roof.
- ✕ Not a single-plant brand. You work with a sourcing partner who coordinates village makers and partner workshops matched to your drum type, size band and finish level.
- ✕ Not a middleman-erasing story.Transparent procurement means you know someone is translating your spec sheet, checking progress and aligning export paperwork—rather than pretending the intermediary step does not exist.
What you get instead
- 1. SourcingMatch your request (tanggu, waist / flower drum, lion dance drum, accessories) to suitable workshops.
- 2. Spec clarityConfirm diameter × depth, measuring method (skin vs shell), skin material, hardware, paint/lacquer and case options before money moves.
- 3. QC coordinationAgreed checkpoints (photos, measurements, packing verification) scaled to order size.
- 4. Export coordinationCommercial invoice, packing list and handoff to your forwarder or agreed shipping route.
Optional visits to partner workshops can be discussed when a project justifies on-site review; we describe them honestly as partner workshop visits, never as “touring Matun’s own factory.”

Section 3 · Technical Checklist
Spec sheet: diameter, depth, skin, hardware, cases
A clean RFQ avoids two weeks of back-and-forth. Copy this structure into your email or quote form:
1) Diameter × depth (in centimeters)
- •State both numbers in cm (you may add approximate inches in parentheses for your team).
- •Ask the workshop to confirm whether diameter is measured across the skin (playing surface) or across the shell / rim.
- •If you need a refresh on common bands for tanggu, waist drums and lion dance drums, use the cm/inch sizing guide.
2) Drum type & role
- •Tanggu (堂鼓): stand-mounted or frame setup; indoor rehearsal vs outdoor ceremony.
- •Waist / flower drum (腰鼓): strap attachment, player age group (youth vs adult), parade duration (weight matters).
- •Lion dance drum: troupe style, indoor stage vs street parade, coordination with cymbals/gongs.
3) Skin
- •Traditional animal skin (often cowhide / buffalo hide depending on drum family) vs synthetic alternatives where applicable.
- •Tell us your climate (humid tropics vs dry heated halls) and storage reality—workshops can advise practical care, though no natural skin is maintenance-free.
4) Hardware & finish
- •Tacks/nails, rings, carrying handles, stand sockets.
- •Shell colour, lacquer, stenciled characters or school/troupe logos (send vector art early if customization is required).
5) Cases & packing
- •Soft bag vs padded case vs wooden crate / export carton.
- •Cases often change volumetric weight more than the drum itself—decide before you compare air vs sea quotes.
6) Accessories (optional)
- •Sticks/mallets, straps, stands, spare heads if your workshop offers them for that model.
Section 4 · Order Planning
Samples & MOQ expectations (qualitative)
We do not publish a fake “500 pieces in stock today” counter on this page. Village workshops build and finish in batches; capacity shifts with season and custom paint/logo work.
Samples
- •A single piece or small trial set is often the right first step when you are validating tone, strap comfort or a school curriculum SKU.
- •Sample unit cost + air courier is usually higher per drum than a consolidated sea order—treat it as risk reduction on specs, not the long-term unit price.
MOQ (minimum order quantity)
There is no single universal MOQ across every tanggu, waist drum and lion dance size. Standard finishes and common diameters are easier to place in smaller runs than custom lacquer, special logos or unusual depths. MOQ depends on:
- • Drum family and diameter × depth band
- • Standard workshop finish vs custom color / artwork
- • Whether you combine multiple sizes in one combined PO
- • Current workshop schedule
How to get a real answer: send your target list via Request a Quote with “sample first” vs “full order” noted—we return what partner workshops can actually accept.
Wholesale vs one-off school orders
- •Schools / troupes often order a structured set (for example several waist drums + one or two larger ensemble drums).
- •Importers / retailers may mix sizes across cartons to fill a pallet or container—confirm mixed-size packing early so carton markings match your warehouse receiving.
Section 5 · Trade Terms
Incoterms note (EXW / FOB ≠ “we own a factory”)
Buyers sometimes see EXW or FOB on a proforma invoice and assume the seller must own a factory building. In international trade, Incoterms only define where risk and logistics responsibility hand over:
EXW (Ex Works / named place)
goods are made available at an agreed pickup point in China (for example after consolidation from a workshop or warehouse). Your forwarder handles export pickup and main carriage—or we help coordinate a forwarder if you do not have one.
FOB (Free on Board, named port)
seller side coordinates inland transport and export clearance to load the vessel at the agreed Chinese port; you control main ocean freight and destination side.
Other terms (CIF, CFR, DDP, air courier)
available depending on destination, order volume and forwarder route; always confirm in writing on the quote.
Using standard Incoterms is normal for a purchasing agent / export coordinator. It never changes Matun Drums’ identity: we coordinate partner workshops and logistics; we do not claim to be the factory owner.
Section 6 · Production & Inspection
Lead time & QC
Lead time (qualitative)
- •Lead time depends on quantity, curing/drying weather for skins and finishes, custom logos, and peak festival seasons (for example ahead of Lunar New Year when lion dance demand spikes).
- •We give an estimated production + packing window on your quote once workshops confirm your exact diameter × depth and finish—not a blanket promise that every order ships in the same number of days.
QC (quality control)
Before cartons close, procurement-level QC focuses on practical failure points:
- ✓Diameter × depth check against the confirmed measuring method (skin vs shell)
- ✓Skin condition (even tension, no obvious tears or transport-risk defects)
- ✓Hardware completeness (rings, tacks, handles, stand fittings as ordered)
- ✓Finish & logo check against approved reference photos
- ✓Packing check (corner protection, moisture wrap, case/crate fit)
For larger orders, we align photo/video checkpoints before balance payment or shipment handoff.

| 60–80+ cm (~24–31"+) | Very heavy, confirm doorway & crate | Thunderous low-end, outdoor carry | Large festivals, temples, major outdoor stages |
By Sound Character
Different construction methods in partner workshops produce distinct acoustic profiles.
Sharp, cutting, high projection
Lion Dance Drum — thick cowhide stretched to high tension over a dense hardwood shell. Cuts through cymbals and outdoor crowd noise.
Warm, resonant, full-bodied
Tanggu — medium-tension cowhide on a barrel-shaped hardwood shell. Balanced overtones suited for ensemble and concert work.
Deep, booming, felt in the chest
Large Tanggu or War Drum (60 cm+) — wide head diameter and deep shell create long low-frequency sustain.
Crisp, light, rhythmic
Waist Drum / Flower Drum — smaller heads with taut skin. Quick response for fast rhythmic patterns during movement.
By Finish & Tier
Partner workshops craft drums across three practical finish and material tiers — ask us to quote the tier that matches your use case.
