Chinese Drum Sizes Explained (cm / inch)
Practical diameter × depth ranges in centimeters and approximate inches for Tanggu, waist / flower drums, and lion dance drums — plus how partner workshops measure shells and skins before you request a quote.
Who this page is for
Matun Drums is a Village Sourced purchasing agent based in Matun Village, Yanshi, Luoyang, China. We help schools, performance troupes, retailers and importers choose practical sizes for Chinese drums—tanggu, waist / flower drums and lion dance drums—then coordinate quotes with partner workshops. We do not manufacture drums and we do not own a factory.
This page is a sizing entry point: common diameter × depth ranges in cm with approximate inches, plus links to product hubs and the buyers guide. It is not a Western drum-kit size chart (snare / tom / kick queries belong elsewhere).
How Chinese drums are measured (diameter × depth)
Most Chinese frame and barrel drums are quoted by two dimensions:
- Diameter — the striking-face width. Workshops may measure across the skin (playing surface) or across the shell / rim. Those methods can differ by a small margin, so always ask which method a quote uses.
- Depth — shell height from the top edge toward the bottom (or, for some double-headed drums, the overall body depth that affects air volume).
Together, diameter × depth shape pitch tendency, volume potential and how the drum travels (strap-on waist drums vs floor / stand-mounted tanggu vs parade lion-dance drums). When you request a quote, send both numbers in centimeters (preferred), plus the drum type and how you will use it (classroom, stage, outdoor parade).
If a supplier only lists one number, clarify whether it is diameter-only and what depth you need. Mixed units (inch diameter + cm depth) create packing mistakes—stick to one system in the PO and convert for reference only.
cm ↔ inch quick conversion note
Rule of thumb: inches ≈ centimeters ÷ 2.54.
Example: 40 cm ÷ 2.54 ≈ 15.7 in.
Tables below show approximate inch columns for orientation. Do not treat a rounded inch as a tighter tolerance than the workshop quote. Confirm:
- Measuring method (skin vs shell)
- Tolerance the workshop can hold
- Whether stands, straps or cases assume a particular outer diameter
Tanggu size ranges
Tanggu (堂鼓) sizes vary with ensemble role and venue. Smaller drums suit practice rooms and compact pits; larger diameters are often discussed for outdoor ceremonies and fuller orchestral projection. Depths frequently move with diameter in workshop practice, but custom depth requests are common—ask rather than assume a fixed ratio.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20–25 | 7.9–9.8 | 20–25 | 7.9–9.8 | Small ensembles, practice, travel sets |
| 30–35 | 11.8–13.8 | 30–35 | 11.8–13.8 | School / medium ensemble use |
| 40–45 | 15.7–17.7 | 40–45 | 15.7–17.7 | Larger ensembles, ceremonies |
| 50–60+ | 19.7–23.6+ | 50–60+ | 19.7–23.6+ | Large venues; confirm handling & stands |

Waist drum / flower drum ranges
Waist drums (腰鼓) and related flower-drum styles are built for movement—straps, dancing and parade routes. Buyers usually trade some maximum volume for portability and balance. Depths are often shorter relative to diameter than a floor tanggu of the same face width, but again: confirm the actual shell, not a catalog stereotype.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15–20 | 5.9–7.9 | 15–20 | 5.9–7.9 | Folk / parade mobility, lighter kits |
| 25–30 | 9.8–11.8 | 20–25 | 7.9–9.8 | Mid-size performance sets |
| 35–40 | 13.8–15.7 | 25–30 | 9.8–11.8 | Larger stage presence; check strap load |

Lion dance drum ranges
Lion dance drums are often specified for outdoor projection and troupe coordination with cymbals and gongs. Diameters commonly discussed for parade and stage work run larger than classroom waist drums. Weight, case size and vehicle loading matter as much as “bigger = better.”
| Diameter (cm) | ≈ Diameter (in) | Depth (cm) — common band | ≈ Depth (in) | Typical context (illustrative) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40–50 | 15.7–19.7 | 40–50 | 15.7–19.7 | Outdoor parade / stage starting points |
| 55–65 | 21.7–25.6 | 45–55 | 17.7–21.7 | Larger troupes / bigger venues |
| 70–80 | 27.6–31.5 | 50–60 | 19.7–23.6 | Very large events — confirm logistics |

How size affects tone & portability (qualitative)
These are tendencies, not laboratory guarantees:
- Larger diameter — often more air volume and stronger low-end presence outdoors; heavier to carry; needs clearer packing and stand/case plans.
- Medium bands — frequent compromise for school halls and mixed indoor/outdoor calendars.
- Smaller / waist-oriented sizes — easier on straps and travel; tone can read brighter or more focused depending on skin and tension.
- Depth — deeper shells often feel “roomier”; shallower shells can feel snappier. Skin type, tension hardware and playing style still dominate what you hear.
If you already know repertoire and venue, put that in the quote form—it helps workshops recommend a practical band instead of the absolute largest drum they can build.
Ordering tips (MOQ, samples, next steps)
Size choice becomes a purchase when you fix:
- Drum type — tanggu / waist / lion dance (or mixed).
- Diameter × depth (cm) — and measuring method.
- Quantity — sample vs bulk; mixed sizes in one shipment are often possible (confirm packing).
- Skin, hardware, finish, cases — travel cases change carton size and freight.
- Destination / Incoterm preference — trade terms are logistics, not proof that Matun owns a plant. Details live on the buyers guide.
MOQ and sample expectations depend on model and workshop capacity—we do not invent a universal stock number here. Use:

FAQ
How do I convert Chinese drum sizes from cm to inches?
Divide diameter (or depth) in centimeters by 2.54 for an approximate inch figure. Always confirm the maker’s measuring method (skin vs shell) and the tolerance on the quote—not just the conversion math.
What size tanggu should I buy?
It depends on ensemble size, venue and repertoire. Start from the common range table above, then request a quote with your target diameter × depth, quantity and use case so partner workshops can confirm what they can build and ship.
Are these the same as Western drum kit sizes?
No. This page focuses on Chinese drums (tanggu, waist / flower drums, lion dance drums). Western kit snare / tom / bass sizes are out of scope and should not drive your Chinese-drum PO.
