Answered at a glance

  • Size means head diameter (confirm measuring method) plus shell depth.
  • Common workshop bands: travel/training ~55–65 cm; general troupe ~60–75 cm; large stage/outdoor ~70–85 cm—not an official national standard.
  • This guide is for Chinese lion dance drums (舞狮鼓), not Western snare/tom kit sizes.
  • Matun is Village Sourced / procurement with partner workshops—not factory-direct own-plant sales.
  • Send repertoire, stage size, and preferred cm/inch with your quote so workshops confirm tolerance and packing.

How lion dance drums are measured

Most buyers and workshops talk in diameter × depth. Diameter is across the playing head (the number people usually mean by “size”). Depth is shell height; deeper shells often feel fuller and louder at the same diameter, but feel is qualitative—not a pitch formula.

Skin vs shell: confirm whether a quoted size is skin diameter, shell outer diameter, or a workshop’s traditional label. Ask for the measuring method in writing before production. Traditional heads are often cowhide or buffalo hide; shells are commonly hardwood. Material choices affect weight and tone color, but they do not replace sending your diameter preference.

cm ↔ inch quick conversion

Approximate conversions (1 inch ≈ 2.54 cm). Round the way your troupe already talks—many teams order in whole cm. Always restate both units in the order email if your team mixes cm and inch habitually.

  • 55 cm ≈ 21.7 in
  • 60 cm ≈ 23.6 in
  • 65 cm ≈ 25.6 in
  • 70 cm ≈ 27.6 in
  • 75 cm ≈ 29.5 in
  • 80 cm ≈ 31.5 in
  • 85 cm ≈ 33.5 in

Weight, cases, and shipping

Weight rises quickly with diameter, shell thickness and hardware—plan who carries the drum between cues. Hard cases sized to the actual diameter/depth protect heads in truck hops; soft bags are for short, careful moves only.

Larger diameters mean larger cartons and higher freight; international orders should confirm packing (corner protection, moisture wrap) in the quote. Decide with the order if you need a spare skin for tour risk. Qualitative only: we do not publish fake “exact kg by diameter” national tables—ask for the workshop’s packed weight on your quote.

Matching drum size to lion head and venue

Larger lion heads and bigger stages often pair with larger drums for visual and sonic balance; small indoor halls rarely need the biggest shell. Fast street sets may favor a size the team can reposition; ceremonial outdoor opens may favor a bigger voice.

Outdoor open air “eats” sound; indoor tiled halls reflect. Prefer a size your drummers can control, not the largest number on a chart. Avoid pitch mysticism—we will not invent Hz↔diameter formulas. If you need a specific feel, reference a recording or an existing drum measurement.

  • If your team already owns a drum that “sounds right,” measure that drum’s diameter the same way the workshop will measure the new one—then order to match.

Common questions

Lion dance drum sizing FAQ

What size lion dance drum should my troupe buy?

Match diameter to venue and choreography. Use the common-range table above as a starting point, then send repertoire + stage size with your quote so the workshop can confirm. Many troupes land near the mid band (~65–75 cm), but that is a habit—not a rule.

Are lion dance drum sizes standardized by a national chart?

No. Makers use common workshop ranges. Always confirm measuring method and tolerance before production. There is no fake “official standard diameter” table on this site.

Do you sell factory-direct from your own plant?

No. Matun is Village Sourced / procurement coordination with partner workshops—not a factory-direct own-plant seller. See site identity wording on About Matun.

Ready to confirm a diameter?

Send preferred cm/inch, venue notes and quantity. Matun coordinates Village Sourced partner workshops—measuring method and packing confirmed before production.
