Drum vs Percussion: What's the Difference?
People use the words interchangeably, but drums and percussion are not the same thing. Understanding the distinction reveals how instruments are classified.
Percussion: The Broad Category
Percussion is a broad musical category that includes any instrument you play by striking, shaking, scraping, or otherwise physically agitating. The word itself comes from Latin: percutere, meaning "to strike." If you hit it, shake it, or scrape it to produce sound, it is a percussion instrument.
This definition is enormous. Pianos are technically percussion instruments — hammers strike strings inside. Xylophones are percussion. Tambourines, maracas, cowbells, woodblocks, cymbals, triangles, gongs, and of course drums are all percussion. Even a table you tap on qualifies as a percussion surface.
In an orchestra, the percussion section includes timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, triangle, tambourine, gong, xylophone, glockenspiel, marimba, and many more. The percussionist must be proficient across this entire range, often switching instruments between movements.
Drums: A Specific Type
Drums are a subset of percussion. Specifically, a drum is a membranophone — an instrument that produces sound through the vibration of a stretched membrane. The membrane, traditionally an animal skin and now typically a synthetic film, is tensioned across a shell. When you strike the membrane, it vibrates and produces sound.
This means every drum is percussion, but not every percussion instrument is a drum. A snare drum is both percussion and a drum. A cymbal is percussion but not a drum. A cowbell is percussion but not a drum. The distinction is whether a vibrating membrane is the sound source.
Common drums include snare drums, bass drums, tom-toms, timpani, congas, bongos, djembes, and tablas. Each has a membrane stretched across a resonating body. Strip away the membrane and you have no drum — just an empty shell.
Membranophones vs Idiophones
Musicologists use the Hornbostel-Sachs classification system to organize instruments by how they produce sound. Within percussion, two families matter most:
- Membranophones produce sound through a vibrating membrane. This is the drum family. The membrane is the primary sound generator, and the shell acts as a resonator. Examples: snare drum, bass drum, timpani, djembe, conga, tabla, bongo.
- Idiophones produce sound through the vibration of their own body. The entire instrument vibrates — there is no separate membrane or string. Examples: cymbals, gongs, triangles, woodblocks, cowbells, maracas, xylophones, marimbas, vibraphones.
A third family, chordophones, includes string instruments like guitars and violins. Pianos are technically chordophones because they produce sound via vibrating strings, even though the mechanism is percussive (hammers striking strings). Aerophones, like flutes and trumpets, produce sound via vibrating air columns.
This classification system explains why a xylophone, which you strike with mallets just like a drum, is not a drum. Its sound comes from the vibrating wooden bars, not a membrane. The bars themselves are the sound source, making it an idiophone.
Why People Confuse Them
The confusion is understandable. In a drum kit, the drummer plays both membranophones (the drums) and idiophones (the cymbals). From the audience's perspective, it all looks like hitting things with sticks. The player is called a "drummer" even though they play cymbals too.
Casual language reinforces the blur. People say "drum set" to mean the entire collection of drums and cymbals. They say "drum circle" to describe gatherings that include djembes, congas, shakers, and tambourines. The word "drum" has become shorthand for all hand-played percussion in everyday speech.
In practice, this does not cause problems. Musicians understand from context whether someone means "drums" narrowly (membranophones only) or broadly (all percussion). But knowing the technical distinction matters for instrument classification, academic study, and appreciating the physics behind different sounds.
Why the Distinction Matters
Understanding the difference helps you choose the right instrument for a purpose and communicate clearly with other musicians. If a band director asks for more percussion, they might want shakers, tambourine, or cowbell — not necessarily more drums. If they ask for more drums, they specifically want membranophones.
The distinction also explains why drums and idiophones behave differently. Drums can be tuned — change the membrane tension and the pitch shifts. Cymbals cannot be tuned; their pitch is fixed by their metal composition and shape. Drums have a resonant head that adds sustain and overtones. A woodblock has no resonant head, so its sound is short and dry. These differences shape how each instrument is used in arrangements and mixes.
Ultimately, both drums and other percussion instruments belong on the same stage. They complement each other: drums provide the fundamental rhythm and pitch, while idiophones add color, texture, and accents. A great percussion section uses both families to create a complete rhythmic picture.
