Drumheads Explained: Coated, Clear & More
The drumhead is where stick meets sound. Choosing the right head transforms your drum's tone more than any other single upgrade.
Single Ply vs Double Ply
The most fundamental choice in drumheads is ply count — how many layers of Mylar film make up the head. This single decision shapes the drum's tone, sustain, and durability more than any other factor.
- Single ply (7-mil or 10-mil): One layer of Mylar. Produces an open, resonant tone with rich overtones and long sustain. More sensitive to light touches, making it ideal for jazz, acoustic, and sensitive playing. The trade-off is durability — single-ply heads dent and break more easily, especially under heavy hitting.
- Double ply (two 7-mil layers): Two layers bonded together. Produces a darker, more focused tone with shorter sustain and fewer overtones. More durable and resistant to denting, making it the standard for rock, pop, and metal. The extra mass lowers the fundamental pitch slightly and adds a fat, controlled quality.
As a general rule: single ply for openness and sensitivity, double ply for durability and focus. Many drummers use single-ply heads on rack toms for singing resonance and double-ply on the snare and bass drum for punch and durability.
Coated vs Clear vs Ebony
The surface treatment of a drumhead dramatically affects both its sound and its appearance.
- Coated: A textured white or off-white coating applied to the Mylar surface. The coating slightly damps overtones and adds a warmer, more controlled tone. Crucially, it provides texture for brush playing — brushes cannot produce their characteristic swish on a smooth surface. Coated heads are the standard choice for snare drums and are popular on toms for jazz and vintage tones.
- Clear: Transparent, uncoated Mylar. Produces a brighter, more open tone with more overtones and attack. The smooth surface gives a sharper stick sound. Popular on toms for rock and pop, where brightness and projection are desired. Cannot be used with brushes.
- Ebony (black): A black pigment embedded in the Mylar. Produces a darker, warmer tone than clear heads, sitting somewhere between clear and coated. Visually striking on stage. Some players use Ebony heads on the resonant (bottom) side of toms for a darker, vintage look and tone.
Batter Head vs Resonant Head
Every drum has two heads, and they serve different purposes. Understanding this distinction is essential for tuning and tone shaping.
- Batter head (top): The head you strike. This is where the sound originates. Batter heads are typically thicker and more durable, designed to withstand repeated stick impact. The batter head controls attack, articulation, and the fundamental pitch of the drum.
- Resonant head (bottom): The head on the underside. It vibrates sympathetically when the batter head is struck, adding sustain, depth, and overtones. Resonant heads are typically thinner — usually a single 7-mil or 10-mil ply — to vibrate freely and respond to the batter head's energy.
The interaction between the two heads determines the drum's overall character. When both heads are tuned to the same pitch, the drum sustains longest. When the resonant head is tuned lower than the batter, the pitch drops as the sound decays, producing a fat, falling tone. When the resonant is higher, the pitch rises, creating a bright, lively bend.
For snare drums, the resonant head must be thin enough for snare wires to respond sensitively. Snare-side heads are extremely thin (usually 3-mil) to maximize sensitivity, even though this makes them fragile.
Hydraulic and Pre-Muffled Heads
Some heads come with built-in muffling to control overtones without external damping.
- Hydraulic heads: Two plies of Mylar with a thin layer of oil sandwiched between them. The oil dampens overtones dramatically, producing a fat, dark, focused tone with very short sustain. Evans Hydraulic heads are the most famous example. Popular in 1970s-style rock and funk, where a dry, punchy sound is desired.
- Pre-muffled heads: Heads with built-in muffling rings, foam patches, or control rings at the edge. These suppress unwanted overtones and ring without needing external gels or tape. Remo Pinstripe (with two muffled rings between plies) and Evans EC2 (with an Edge Control ring) are popular examples. Great for drummers who want a controlled tone without fussing with external muffling.
- Built-in dot heads: A reinforced dot in the center of the head adds durability and focuses the sound. Common on snare batter heads for rock and marching applications where durability is paramount.
When to Replace Drumheads
Drumheads do not last forever. Over time, repeated striking stretches, weakens, and deforms the Mylar, degrading both tone and response. Knowing when to replace them keeps your kit sounding its best.
Signs it is time for new heads:
- Dents and pits: Visible indentations in the head mean the Mylar has been permanently deformed. Dented heads produce dead, inconsistent spots and will not tune evenly.
- Loss of tone: If your drum sounds dull, lifeless, or muddy despite proper tuning, the heads may be worn out. Old heads lose their ability to produce clear overtones.
- Coating wear: On coated heads, if the white surface has worn away in the center, the tone will be inconsistent and brushes will not respond properly.
- Tuning instability: If a head will not hold its tuning or produces different pitches at different tension rods, the Mylar has stretched unevenly and needs replacement.
As a rough guideline, snare batter heads need replacement every 3 to 6 months for active players. Tom batter heads last 6 to 12 months. Bass drum batter heads can last a year or more. Resonant heads last much longer — every 2 to 3 years is usually sufficient, since they are not struck directly.
Major Brands: Remo, Evans, Aquarian
Three companies dominate the drumhead market, each with distinct design philosophies and flagship products.
- Remo: The industry pioneer. Remo invented the synthetic drumhead in 1957 and remains the most widely used brand. The Ambassador (single-ply) and Emperor (double-ply) are industry standards found on countless recordings. Remo heads tend to have a warm, classic tone and are the default choice for many drum manufacturers.
- Evans: Known for innovation and engineering. Evans pioneered hydraulic heads, pre-muffled designs (EC2, EMAD), and level 360 technology for better seating on the drum. Evans heads often have a slightly brighter, more modern tone than Remo. The EMAD bass drum head, with its removable muffling rings, is a best-seller.
- Aquarian: A smaller company with a loyal following. Aquarian is known for its Superhead series, Response II double-ply heads, and modern coating technology. Many players find Aquarian heads particularly durable and long-lasting. Their Hi-Energy snare head is a favorite among hard-hitting rock drummers.
All three brands make excellent heads, and the choice often comes down to personal preference. Try heads from each brand on the same drum and listen to the difference. Your ears — and the music you play — will tell you which is right.
