Types of Chinese Drums: Tanggu, Waist & Lion Dance
For most overseas buyers, the practical categories are tanggu (堂鼓), waist drums / yaogu (腰鼓), and lion dance drums (舞狮鼓). Sizes, skins and hardware vary by use—confirm before order.
Village Sourced — not a factory storefront
Matun Drums is a Village Sourced purchasing agent based in Matun Village, Yanshi, Luoyang, China. We coordinate quotes and export QC with partner village workshops. We do not manufacture drums and we do not own a factory.
This hub is for Chinese drums—not Western snare / tom / kick kit charts (those queries are out of scope here).
Overview: how Chinese drums are grouped for buyers
Buyers rarely need an ethnomusicology encyclopedia on day one. They need a map that answers: which drum type, which size band, which product page, then quote.
| Buyer category | Chinese name | How it is usually used | Next deep page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tanggu | 堂鼓 | Floor / stand-mounted barrel or hall drum for ensembles, schools, ceremonies | sizes + tanggu product |
| Waist drum (yaogu) | 腰鼓 | Strapped on the body for dance, folk and parade movement | waist-drums product |
| Lion dance drum | 舞狮鼓 | Ensemble / parade voice with lion dance teams | size guide + lion dance product |
Skins (often cowhide or buffalo hide), hardwood shells and hardware options differ by workshop. Treat published size bands as common ranges—confirm measuring method (skin vs shell) and tolerance before the PO.

Tanggu (堂鼓): role, typical use, link sizes
Tanggu is the broad “hall / barrel drum” category many schools and ensembles mean when they say “Chinese drum” without a qualifier. Typical traits for buyers:
- Played on a stand or floor mount (not worn on the waist)
- Quoted mainly by diameter × depth in centimeters
- Smaller faces for practice rooms and compact pits; larger diameters for outdoor ceremony and fuller projection
Size bands and cm/inch notes live on Chinese drum sizes explained. Product browsing: /en/tanggu. When you request a quote, send diameter × depth, quantity, skin preference if known, and whether you need stands or cases—not only “one big drum.”
Waist drum / yaogu (腰鼓): performance use
Waist drums are built for movement. Straps, balance and portability matter as much as absolute volume. Buyers usually trade some maximum boom for a shell the performer can wear through dance and parade routes.
- Not the same instrument as a lion dance ensemble drum (see FAQ)
- Depths are often shorter relative to diameter than a floor tanggu of similar face width—confirm the actual shell, do not assume a fixed ratio
- Common buyers: schools, folk troupes, festival organizers, wholesale importers filling performance kits

Lion dance drum: ensemble role
Lion dance drums support lion dance teams outdoors and on stage. They are typically larger ensemble drums, not strap-on waist drums.
- Choose diameter for venue, choreography and how the team travels (cases / truck space)
- There is no single official national standard diameter chart—use common workshop ranges and measure any drum your team already likes the same way the workshop will measure the new one
- Pair size thinking with lion-head scale and repertoire; avoid invented Hz↔diameter formulas

Other types (brief)
Chinese percussion is wider than three hubs. For buyer orientation only—name-check, not encyclopedia filler:
- Dangu / related frame styles — smaller handheld or frame forms appear in some folk and theatrical contexts; confirm local naming with your teacher or repertoire list before ordering.
- Temple / ritual variants — ceremonial duties may call for specific diameters or finishes; send photos or repertoire notes rather than assuming a catalogue synonym.
- Paired / set purchases — troupes often mix tanggu + waist + lion dance drums in one shipment; packing and mixed-size cartons should be confirmed in the quote.
If a named type is critical to your PO and not listed above, put the Chinese name + a photo or recording reference in the quote form—we coordinate with partner workshops instead of inventing a fake standard chart.
How to choose by use-case
| Use-case | Often starts with | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|
| School / classroom | Mid tanggu or lighter waist sets | Durability, stands, spare skins |
| Performance troupe | Waist and/or lion dance sized to choreography | Strap load, cases, travel weight |
| Temple / ceremony | Tanggu diameter matched to space | Finish, stands, outdoor weather packing |
| Export wholesale | Mixed types + size bands + MOQ discussion | Measuring method, packing, Incoterm preference |
Still unsure? Send venue, repertoire and any existing drum measurement. Prefer a practical band over the largest number on a chart. Procurement checklist: Buyers guide.
