Village Sourced production through Matun Drums

Matun Drums is a Village Sourced purchasing agent based in Matun Village, Yanshi, Luoyang, China. The company coordinates quotations, QC photos, and export documents with partner village workshops. It does not manufacture drums or own a production plant.

Matun Village is a known Chinese drum-making community. Its workshops make large or hall drums, waist drums, war drums, and painted or dragon drums. A 19 December 2023 report from Luoyang Daily also listed large drums, waist drums, and war drums (大鼓、腰鼓、战鼓) as products associated with the village industry. This press report describes the village craft community; it is not a statement of Matun Drums’ current inventory.

Where a zhangu is used

A zhangu can support stage work as a strong visual and audible centerpiece; drum corps and ensembles needing a large Chinese drum voice; temple and civic ceremonies; and school or community programs for teaching ensembles and festivals.

The instrument must suit the repertoire and the playing environment. A school that only needs a compact ensemble drum may have different requirements from a touring troupe requiring a larger voice, protective packing, and a dedicated stand.

For audiences organizing festivals and public performances, see /en/audiences/festival-organizers.

How zhangu relates to tanggu

Chinese buyers may use tanggu (堂鼓), zhangu, “Chinese war drum,” and “Chinese battle drum” when describing related large-drum requirements. However, these names do not always identify one identical instrument or one fixed specification.

Confirm the repertoire name with the teacher, director, or performer before ordering. Also confirm whether the requested instrument is a war-drum form, a tanggu-style drum, or a different large-drum type.

Start with /en/tanggu for the hall-drum path, and /en/drum-knowledge/types-of-chinese-drums to distinguish families. Non-standard dimensions or finishes: /en/custom-drums.

Sizes: confirm the dimensions, not a borrowed chart

Chinese drums are commonly described by diameter × depth. Before comparing quotations, state whether the diameter is measured across the shell or across the installed skin face. Also request the applicable tolerance.

Common workshop size ranges exist, but the exact diameter × depth bands for war drums must be confirmed with Matun workshop partners before PO. Do not substitute a tanggu size table for a zhangu specification.

See /en/drum-knowledge/drum-sizes-explained for the general measuring method. Any tanggu bands shown there are orientation only—not a zhangu standard chart.

Confirm whether any workshop catalogue name (for example Chinese labels that include 战鼓 or 高战) maps to the export English name you intend. Catalogue-name mapping must be confirmed with Matun workshop partners before PO.

Cowhide or buffalo hide

Both cowhide and buffalo hide are natural skin options discussed for Chinese drums. The correct choice should reflect the drum’s construction, the destination’s climate, and how often the instrument will travel.

Ask the workshop to confirm the skin species proposed, available thickness, how the skin is fitted and finished, expected care in humid/dry/hot/cold conditions, protection needed in storage and transit, and whether the skin is fitted or supplied separately.

Default skin type by specification and thickness bands must be confirmed with Matun workshop partners before PO.

Stands, packing, and shipping

A drum stand is a separate logistics and performance specification. Describe the expected playing position, venue, floor surface, and transport method before asking for a stand recommendation.

Standard stand and hardware SKUs and load ratings must be confirmed with Matun workshop partners before PO.

Review /en/shipping-import for shipment planning and /en/guides/import-chinese-drums for importing considerations. Confirm destination, Incoterm, export documents, insurance, and delivery responsibilities in writing.

An EXW reference on documents does not mean Matun Drums owns a plant. Matun Drums remains the Village Sourced purchasing agent coordinating with partner village workshops.

Zhangu FAQ

Chinese war drum buying questions

Is a zhangu the same as a tanggu?

Not necessarily. Buyers may use the names for related large-drum requirements, but the repertoire label and exact construction should be confirmed with the teacher or director. Matun Drums can coordinate the specification with the appropriate partner village workshop.

What size should I choose for a stage performance?

Choose the size according to the playing role, venue, player, and ensemble balance. Do not order from a tanggu size table or a general war-drum photograph. Provide the preferred diameter × depth and confirm the measuring method and available workshop ranges with Matun workshop partners before PO.

Can I request cowhide or buffalo hide for an overseas destination?

Yes, state your preference and destination climate during the inquiry. The final skin, thickness, and preparation must be confirmed with Matun workshop partners before PO.

Are the stand, packing, and shipping included in the quotation?

They should be quoted as separate requirements unless the quotation states otherwise. Confirm stand type, load rating, packing method, Incoterm, destination, and export-document scope. Any stand SKU, MOQ, or lead time must be confirmed with Matun workshop partners before PO.

Do you manufacture war drums in your own factory?

No. Matun Drums is a Village Sourced purchasing agent coordinating with partner village workshops—not a factory-direct manufacturer.
