Cymbal Materials and Alloys Explained

The alloy a cymbal is made from determines its fundamental character. Two cymbals with identical shapes but different alloys will sound completely different. Understanding cymbal materials helps you make informed choices and build a kit that sounds cohesive.

B20 Bronze: Professional Grade

B20 bronze, composed of approximately 80 percent copper and 20 percent tin, is the gold standard for professional cymbals. This alloy has been used for centuries, dating back to the origins of cymbal making in Turkey. B20 produces a rich, complex sound with layered overtones that musicians describe as musical and expressive.

The high tin content makes B20 brittle enough to be hammered and lathed into thin, responsive cymbals, yet durable enough to withstand repeated striking. B20 cymbals are used in virtually all professional settings, from orchestral performances to stadium rock concerts. Zildjian, Sabian, Meinl, and Paiste all produce their flagship lines from B20 bronze.

Because B20 is difficult to work with and requires skilled craftsmanship, cymbals made from this alloy tend to be more expensive. Each B20 cymbal has a slightly unique sound due to the hand-hammering process, which many drummers consider a virtue rather than a flaw.

B8 Bronze: Mid-Range Performance

B8 bronze contains about 92 percent copper and 8 percent tin. The lower tin content makes this alloy easier to manufacture and more consistent from cymbal to cymbal. B8 cymbals produce a brighter, more focused sound with fewer overtones than B20.

While they lack the complexity of B20, B8 cymbals are excellent value. They project well and cut through a mix, making them popular for rock and pop settings where brightness is desirable. Many mid-range cymbal lines from major brands use B8 bronze, and they serve as a solid stepping stone for drummers upgrading from entry-level brass cymbals.

Brass: Entry-Level Brightness

Brass cymbals are made from an alloy of copper and zinc, typically with a composition around 63 percent copper and 37 percent zinc. They are the most affordable cymbals on the market and are commonly included with beginner drum kits.

Brass produces a bright, thin sound with limited complexity. The tone can be harsh and metallic, lacking the warmth and depth of bronze alloys. However, modern brass cymbals have improved significantly, and some entry-level lines sound surprisingly musical for the price. They are fine for practice and early lessons but most drummers outgrow them quickly.

Nickel Silver and Other Alloys

Nickel silver, an alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc, has been used by Paiste for several professional cymbal lines. It produces a dry, controlled sound with a distinct silvery character. Paiste's Signature series, made from a proprietary bronze alloy, demonstrates that manufacturers continue to experiment with new formulations to achieve unique tonal properties.

Some manufacturers also use hybrid approaches, combining different alloys in a single cymbal or applying special treatments to alter the surface properties. These innovations expand the tonal palette available to modern drummers.

Casting vs Sheet Forming

How the alloy is shaped into a cymbal is as important as the alloy itself. Cast cymbals are made by pouring molten metal into a mold, then hammering and lathing the resulting disc into its final form. This process is used for all B20 cymbals and produces the complex, layered sound that professionals demand.

Sheet cymbals are stamped from large sheets of pre-rolled metal. This method is faster and cheaper, making it standard for B8 and brass cymbals. Sheet cymbals are more consistent but lack the tonal complexity of cast cymbals. The manufacturing method is a key reason why professional cymbals cost significantly more than student models.

Hammering and Lathing: Hand vs Machine

After a cymbal blank is formed, it is hammered to shape its profile and introduce tension patterns that affect vibration. Hand-hammered cymbals, where a craftsman strikes the metal thousands of times, produce a complex, organic sound with rich overtones. No two hand-hammered cymbals sound exactly alike.

Machine-hammered cymbals are struck by automated hammers in a consistent pattern. This produces a more uniform sound, which is desirable for drummers who need matched pairs or consistent cymbal sets. Lathing, the process of cutting grooves into the surface, further shapes the sound by removing material and reducing mass. Unlathed cymbals, like many Meinl Byzance Extra Dry models, produce a raw, earthy tone with reduced sustain.

  • Meinl: A German brand known for diverse ranges, including the Byzance and Classics Custom lines, and for popularizing dark, dry tones.
  • Paiste: A Swiss brand known for consistency and the proprietary Signature alloy. Their cymbals are prized for their refined, controlled sound.
