Drumstick Guide: Sizes, Materials & Tips
Drumsticks are the most personal part of your setup. The right stick can make playing feel effortless, while the wrong one can leave you fatigued and frustrated. This guide breaks down everything you need to know about stick sizes, materials, and tip shapes.
Stick Sizes Explained
Drumstick sizes use a numbering system that indicates diameter and length. The number represents thickness (lower numbers are thicker) and the letter indicates the intended application. Here are the most common sizes:
- 7A: Thin and light. Ideal for jazz, acoustic sets, and younger players. Fast and nimble but lacks power.
- 5A: The most popular size worldwide. A versatile middle ground suitable for rock, pop, jazz, and practice. About 0.565 inches in diameter.
- 5B: Slightly thicker than 5A. Offers more power and durability, favored by rock drummers who play hard.
- 3A: Between 5B and 2B in thickness. A balanced option for drummers who want power without excessive weight.
- 2B: Thick and heavy. Built for loud playing, metal, and marching. Excellent for building wrist strength during practice.
Drumstick Materials
The wood your sticks are made from affects durability, weight, and feel. Each species has distinct characteristics that suit different playing situations.
- Hickory: The most common drumstick material. Hickory absorbs shock well, balances weight and durability, and works for nearly every genre. About 80 percent of all sticks sold are hickory.
- Maple: Lighter than hickory, maple allows for larger stick diameters without added weight. Great for fast playing and lower volume situations, but less durable.
- Oak: Dense and durable, oak sticks last longer than hickory but transmit more vibration to your hands. Some drummers find them fatiguing over long sessions.
- Synthetic: Made from carbon fiber or composite materials. Extremely durable and consistent, but they feel different from wood and can damage cymbals if you play rimshots aggressively.
Tip Shapes: Round, Barrel, Acorn, Teardrop
The tip of the drumstick shapes the sound it produces on cymbals and drums. Tip shape affects articulation, sustain, and the character of the contact sound.
- Round: Produces a bright, focused, and consistent sound. Great for clarity on ride cymbals but can sound harsh on drum heads.
- Barrel: Delivers a broad, powerful sound with strong projection. Popular in rock and metal for its cutting tone.
- Acorn: Offers a warm, full-bodied tone that balances brightness and depth. The most versatile tip shape.
- Teardrop: Produces a dark, mellow sound with a soft attack. Favored by jazz drummers for its warm cymbal tone.
You also have a choice between wood and nylon tips. Wood tips produce a warmer, more natural sound but chip over time. Nylon tips are more durable and produce a brighter, more defined cymbal sound, though some drummers feel they sound artificial.
Taper and Length Effects
The taper is the gradual thinning of the stick from the body to the tip. A long taper makes the stick feel faster and more responsive, with a lighter front-end feel. A short taper shifts weight toward the tip, giving the stick more power and projection but making it feel less nimble.
Stick length also matters. Longer sticks give you more reach and leverage, which helps with large kits. Shorter sticks offer better control and are less tiring during fast, intricate playing. Most 5A sticks are around 16 inches long, which is a comfortable middle ground for most drummers.
How to Choose the Right Stick
Start with 5A hickory sticks if you are unsure. They are the industry standard for a reason: versatile, balanced, and widely available. From there, adjust based on your needs. If you play jazz at low volumes, try 7A maple. If you play hard rock or metal, move up to 5B or 2B.
Always buy sticks in matched pairs. Roll them on a flat surface to check for warpage, and hold them by the tips to compare pitch by tapping them together. Matched sticks should produce the same pitch. Replace sticks when they crack, splinter, or lose their tip shape, as damaged sticks can harm your drumheads and cymbals.
